We do not believe in fearmongering to drive customer sales. Brands have huge influence over people in their everyday lives, so they/we need to be responsible, positive and give certainty where there often is none.

Geoffrey McDonald Bowll

MD • Head of Research and Marketing Strategy

Geoffrey is a keen observer of people: for example, he can match a person’s accent to their city of origin 9 times out of 10. This partly comes from his background in market research prior to establishing Starship in 1991. As an ideas man, Geoffrey understands what motivates people to act and he’s a natural lateral thinker. Clients want Geoffrey’s brain on their business as he combines his inventive creative marketing thinking with a real understanding of how their business model works. Within Starship he is our fearless leader and a nice guy who’s always happy to help someone out. Geoffrey is a giver and has an admirable set of values. He is driven by ideas, hiring people who are better than him and building his team. He’s hilarious and positive and can talk the legs off a donkey. On weekends you’ll find him building something, inventing something, or simply playing with his fishing gear, making new lures.

 


Prue Kirkcaldie

Creative Founder • Head of Creative Strategy

If your brand needs a long-tailed, deeply emotive creative strategy, that will work across all channels to market, Prue’s your girl. Prue is a Director of Starship. Her experience spans international agencies in New York, London, Amsterdam, New Zealand and Australia, working with major and challenger brands to keep them relevant, top of mind and connected. Prue comes up with ‘big ideas’ that have fertile grounds to draw from, enabling brands to evolve and stay relevant to a growing target market base, online and offline. Within Starship, she is General Manager looking after the business side of things while driving internal processes. After hours Prue is an artist whose work sells. She primarily works with oil, wood, and canvas, her work is sculptural and plays with the light, changing the viewers’ perceptions as they move around her paintings. Prue draws like the wind and also creates wall sculptures from marine ply that play with negative and positive spaces.

 


Gavel Markowski

Creative Director

Gav is known for his steady, calm, consistent manner, and brilliant creativity. He’s the glue that binds the team together, and that’s just one reason why we love him. Gav came to Starship in 2004, now he’s in charge of the creative process. We can all rely on him and his team to get the job done. Gavel is not only a great ideas generator but a great team communicator. On a day-to-day basis, he drives accounts forward with quality creative output that meets our clients’ dreams. On the weekends and holidays, he’s a super-light, intrepid world traveler. He loves new experiences, new cultures, new cities and the great outdoors. He’s the kind of guy who has an exotic holiday a couple of times a year and takes minimal clothes in a backpack, so he doesn’t have to check his luggage through.

 


Damian de Ryk

Head of Digital Strategy

Damian drives Starship’s ‘Digital Therapy Unit’, which deals with breaks or other problems in your digital ecosystem. If you have a digital presence, or for that matter, a database and it’s not working for you or pulling its weight, Damian is your man. Damian has over 20 years’ experience with CRM marketing, both as a consultant to small-medium businesses and as a senior marketing executive in the corporate world. He’s recorded great CRM-enabled sales and marketing successes across a variety of industries, from services industries to FMCG and retail, through to the building and construction industry.

 


Anya Ow

Head of Branding and Design

Anya always surprises us and our clients. She knows how a brand needs to look and how to craft its brand strategy, personality, and language–key that would help our clients stand out in increasingly crowded and competitive marketplaces. From big brands needing multiple strategies to small start-ups needing to stand out and attract the right stakeholders, Anya is your girl. She specialized in intellectual property during law school and practiced law for a few years before changing gears to communications design. Off the clock, she’s a lover of big cities, a foodie, an illustrator and a writer. She published her first novel at the end of 2016 and has also written several short stories for various magazines.

 


Helen Papas

Head of Finance

Helen is our newest member, often found in the background making sure that money comes in and goes out at the appropriate times. It’s Helen who provides us with internal reporting so that we know that Starship is on track and successful. She’s the one who allows the rest of the team to get on and concentrate on what they are good at.

 


Buster

Head of Public Relations

We all love Buster. He’s switched on, and is a keen judge of character, often able to figure out the weakest link in the room to beg treats from. Buster is a futurist and an ideas dog and is passionate about finding new ways to appropriate food from unexpected places. You’ll also often find him practicing mindfulness by exercising his sleeping skills under a table somewhere. But when he’s on the job chasing the cat next door, cruising round looking for cuddles or treats, or when he hears the word ‘walk’, he’s simply adorable. Buster is a core part of Starship. His main role is ‘internal communications and human resources’ and telling us who we should and shouldn’t work with.
